Dear Annie

My parents want to have me tested for drugs. I been smoking pot and heard it stays in your system for at least one month. Is this true?

If by “in your system” you mean detectable by drug testing, then you should know that the chemicals in marijuana are stored in your body’s fat cells, and can be detected in urine for 3 to 4 days after a single use and up to 3 to 4 weeks after prolonged daily use. Detection depends upon the sensitivity and “cutoff level” of the test used.

The health effects of having marijuana “in your system” can be short-term or permanent. Marijuana can affect your brain by altering your judgment, impairing coordination and affecting your memory. Marijuana smoke can damage your lungs just like tobacco smoke. Frequent marijuana use can lead to addiction and can worsen mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.
